Authenticating an Hermès Birkin & Kelly

Saddle Stitching
Every Birkin and Kelly is hand-saddle-stitched with two needles working in opposite directions. Genuine stitches lean slightly right, are perfectly even in tension, and never machine-uniform. Counterfeits typically show mechanically identical, vertical stitches.
The Blindstamp
Located on the front strap for Birkin and inside the strap for Kelly, the blindstamp encodes the year of production and the craftsman's atelier code. Font weight, spacing, and depth are consistent within each era — we cross-reference every stamp against internal archives.
Hardware & Turn Lock
Palladium and gold hardware is solid brass, plated, and weighty. The turn lock should rotate with a precise, dampened click — never loose, never gritty. Screws are slotted (not Phillips) with hand-finished heads.
Leather & Grain
Togo, Epsom, Clemence, and Swift each have signature grain patterns. Under raking light, the pores should feel three-dimensional and irregular in a natural way. Painted edges are lacquered in thin, glassy layers — never thick or rubbery.
